In the 1970s, San Francisco was a center of gay political power, while throughout the state a battle was fought over a proposed law to limit gay rights. Out of this struggle emerged Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials anywhere. In 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were killed by Dan White, who served with Milk on the San Francisco city council. The community’s response—ranging from silent vigil to violent riots—helped define gay politics as we know it. Harvey Fierstein narrates this powerful story of communities in conflict.
